FYS: READING THE LORD OF THE RINGS

Prof. Sylvia Federico

The first six weeks of this class were spent reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy and writing short reflection essays. The final six weeks were spent revising and re-writing these essays and working on our final paper and a short video essay using clips from the films to argue a point.

FYS is a writing intensive class for first-year students and satisfies the W1 requirement.

FINAL PAPER

Fall 2015

In this paper, we were asked to write about a topic within the Lord of the Rings that interested us. I wrote about the novels as an allegory, and how, despite Tolkien’s wishes, the novel ended up representing a biblical allegory.

The paper was very difficult to write, as it had to deal with a lot of theological ideas I had yet to come across, and my argument could very quickly turn into a tangent if I wasn’t careful. I ended up being very proud of the final project, and I worked very hard to make it comprehensive and effective.
