BIO 242

This class is the second of the three biology core courses, and focuses on cellular and molecular biology. This is the first time students are heavily introduced to writing formal lab reports and reading and understanding primary literature. There are two formal lab reports, the amylase lab and the photosynthesis lab. Students get the opportunity to revise the amylase lab for up to 50% of the points lost.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS LAB

Fall 2016

This paper is a lab report on the photosynthetic mechanism in the plant cell chloroplast when the proton gradient or electron transport chain are disabled. We found that when the proton gradient was disabled, photosynthesis still occurred but at a slower rate, and when the ETC was disabled, photosynthesis could not occur.

The most challenging aspect of this lab report was incorporating comments on our structure and mechanics of the previous paper into a new paper with a different topic. It was helpful to have two other lab partners to distribute the work more or less evenly.
