DENDROLOGY

Professor: Brett Huggett

The classroom portion of this class focused on major families of woody plant species, such as trees and shrubs. We learned ecological and human uses of these plants.

Lab, which was completely field-based, consisted of visiting different sites and learning how to correctly identify and describe 101 different species of trees and shrubs native to Maine.

QUAD TREE ESSAY

Fall 2017

We were asked to choose a specific tree on the Bates College campus and write a natural history essay about it. I chose the saucer magnolia, which is a hybrid of two different magnolias first crossed in France.

The most difficult part of writing this was writing it so that someone not familiar with plants and identification would be able to relate to this tree and its interesting history. I am very proud of this because I worked very hard on getting the public communication aspect of this assignment correct and because it is published on the Bates Canopy website.
